Faith and Mental Illness Study Kit
  • Image 1
List: $19.99

When people ask for help with severe depression or an addiction, do you think their primary problem is spiritual? Are you skeptical of the help that mental health experts offer? Have you ever discouraged someone from seeking professional help out of fear that it might corrupt them with atheistic worldviews and unbelieving psychobabble? Even though we recommend that people see doctors for cancer and diabetes, we sometimes dismiss treatment for mental illnesses. Unsurprisingly then, mental health issues tend to be an area where most church members and pastors feel inadequate when they try to help those who are suffering with them. Statistics reveal that in churches of almost any size a surprising number of people have suffered, are suffering, or will suffer from some type of mental illness. How should Christians view mental illnesses and their treatment? How should we relate to and use (or not use) professional mental health treatments? These are complicated questions, and they deserve considered and scriptural responses. This study kit will wrestle with the issues of mental health and try to help Christians come to a more biblical understanding of their reality and treatment.

This six-part study is composed of four sections.  Lesson 1 provides a biblical and theological foundation for the goodness of the physical world and the need for mental health. Lessons 2-3 focus on some contributing factors to mental illnesses. They also discuss the nature of treatments and how God works through them. Lesson 4 looks at some specific mental illnesses and ways that they can be treated. Finally, Lessons 5-6 discuss how the church should respond to those with mental illnesses.
